A windows registry change needs to be applied to allow the Windows client to connect to the Samba server.
On Windows XP the following registry information needs to be added:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters]
"EnablePlainTextPassword"=dword:00000001
